To replace the rear parking brake cables-to-equalizer, begin by loosening the rear wheel lug nuts, raising the rear of the vehicle, and supporting it on jackstands. Remove the wheel and ensure the parking brake is fully released, then take off the brake disc and parking brake shoes while disconnecting the parking brake lever. Unbolt the cable housing from the backing plate and all cable brackets. Lower the exhaust pipe, remove the heat shield for access to the cable clamps, and release the cable housing from the clamp. Remove the clip securing the cable end to the bracket, noting its mounting configuration. Disconnect the cable end from the equalizer by aligning the cable with the slot in the top of the equalizer. On Lexus models, access the equalizer by removing the floor crossmember mounting fasteners and lifting the crossmember. For the parking brake lever-to-equalizer cable, remove the center console, release the parking brake cable, remove the locknut and adjusting nut, and detach the cable from the lever. Inside the console area, remove the bolts securing the cable flange to the floor and push it out through the hole. Installation is the reverse of removal, applying grease to the cable end that contacts the equalizer and adjusting the parking brake cable. For the parking brake pedal-to-intermediate lever cable on pedal-type models, remove front seats, console, and shift lever assembly. Remove the nuts securing the cable to the rear of the turnbuckle, then twist the turnbuckle off the front cable end. On Lexus models with VSC, remove the yaw rate sensor from the console for access to the cable. Disconnect the electrical connector, remove the sensor bracket-to-floor bolts, and remove the sensor. Remove the driver's kick panel, knee bolster, and reinforcement to access the parking brake pedal bracket sub-assembly. Loosen and remove the locknut and adjuster nut on the cable end at the pedal assembly, remove the clip securing the cable end to the front of the parking brake pedal assembly, and pull the cable out. Locate and remove the clamps securing the cable to the floor, then install the new cable following the reverse of the removal procedure and adjusting the parking brake afterward.
