Lexus ES300 Igniter

The Lexus ES300 Igniter supplies the important on-off switching of coil current that allows the engine to generate a strong, timely spark. Working like an electronic gatekeeper, the Igniter takes low amperage signals from the ignition switch or engine computer and rapidly opens and closes the coil primary circuit, causing the magnetic field to collapse and produce the fifteen to forty thousand volts that jump the spark plug gap. In first generation Lexus ES300 models, where a distributor was still in use, the Igniter was housed inside or near the distributor housing and worked in concert with a pickup coil and reluctor wheel to replace the fragile breaker points, while still allowing mechanics to set base timing using a light. Later Lexus ES300 models switched to distributorless systems, in which a crankshaft position sensor adds information to the engine control unit, which in turn controls the Igniter, firing multiple coil packs with computer control for stronger combustion, better mileage, and lower emissions. Despite the change in structure, the objective of the part has remained unchanged, and the symptoms of failure have also remained the same, such as no start, no spark, or the test light will not flicker when connected to the coil negative. Swapping an aging Igniter is moderate in difficulty, requiring only common hand tools, careful removal of connectors, and a voltage check after installation to ensure restored spark power in any Lexus ES300.

Lexus ES300 Igniter Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to test the igniter function on Lexus ES300?
    A:
This guide doesn't apply to integral Ignition Coil/igniter units on 2000+ Avalon and 1999+ Lexus ES 300 models. Testing these units is complex and best left to professionals. You can check the ignition confirmation signal, but identifying a bad igniter is a process of elimination. If suspected, have it tested by a dealer or qualified repair shop. Start by disconnecting the igniter's electrical connector. Check for battery voltage on terminal no. 9, 5.0 volts at terminal no. 4, and a fluctuating 0.1 to 4.5 volt signal at terminals no. 5, 6, and 7 while the engine is cranked. Also, check for continuity to a good chassis ground at terminal no.If all checks are good, reconnect the igniter, disconnect the ignition coils, and check for an ignition coil trigger signal. If absent, check the circuits from the igniter to the coils. If circuits are good, replace the igniter.
