Lexus RX330 Flywheel

Lexus RX330 Flywheel smooths engine power by storing rotational energy for drivers to enjoy functionality and torque delivery. Across the production run, Lexus paired the RX330 clutch with a solid Flywheel that is solidly built and, on some editions, a dual mass Flywheel with the addition of internal springs for additional vibration damping. The Flywheel bolts on to the crankshaft and its inertia helps to balance the pulsed combustion strokes, its ring gear engages with the starter to spin the engine when it is being started up and its face provides the clutch friction surface. Solid versions can be resurfaced lightly when scoring does occur but Lexus often recommends replacement of any RX330 unit exhibiting heat cracks or excessive runout, especially the dual mass design whose spring pack cannot be machined. A worn Flywheel or damaged ring gear on the RX330 that has high mileage might produce grinding noises when the vehicle starts. Lexus reliability will depend on maintaining this part within specification.

Lexus RX330 Flywheel Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the Flywheel in the 3.5L V6 engine on Lexus RX330?
    A:
To completely withdraw the engine/transmission assembly from the car first, it is required to separate the transaxle from the engine. Mark the key ways of the driveplate and crankshaft so it will align properly when it is reinstalled. Remove the old bolts that clamps down the driveplate over the crankshaft, and, if a crankshaft rotates, put a screwdriver under the driveplate to prevent if from turning. Be very slow in the process of pulling out the driveplate and support it while removing the last bolt on the puller, and note that the vehicle automatic transmission has spacers on each side of the driveplate. Regarding the 2GR-FKS engines, understand the crankshaft angle sensor plate and beveled edge washer. Iwash the driveplate in order to remove all chances of grease and oily films, after that I look for cracks on the driveplate and check the condition of the ring gear teeth. Replace the rear crankshaft seal if it comes with one and check and clean the mating surface for the drive-plate and crankshaft. On 2GR-FKS engines, bolt the crankshaft angle sensor plate followed by the proper orientation of the same before the fitting of the driveplate and spacer. Insert the driveplate onto the crankshaft by placing the marks made during the removal of the component back into place if there are alignment dowels or using the staggered bolt holes, in case there are any, to ensure installation of driveplate is correct. Put a thread-locking compound on new bolts and tighten and lock them interlacely in a gradual manner to the final torque magnitude. The subsequent steps of installation procedure are contrary to the removal steps of flash application.
