If a starting circuit malfunctions, don't immediately blame the starter. Instead, systematically check components and connections. Ensure battery cable clamps are clean and tight, inspect battery cables, assess the battery's condition, examine the starter solenoid wiring, check starter mounting bolts, fusible links, and the ignition switch circuit. Also, check the Park/Neutral switch (automatic) or clutch start switch (manual) and confirm the shift lever's position. If the starter doesn't engage, check for battery voltage at the solenoid's positive terminal. If absent, check fuses and relays. If present but the starter doesn't work, bench test the starter. If it cranks slowly, check the cranking voltage and current draw. If they're off, replace the starter. If the starter gets voltage but doesn't activate, bench test to see if the solenoid or starter motor is defective.
