Q:
How do I inspect, diagnose, and replace the brake light switch, including the steps for checking its functionality and performing replacement? Posted by Customer
A:
To inspect the brake light switch, locate it on the brake pedal bracket by removing the trim panel beneath the steering column. With the brake pedal fully released, the switch opens the brake light circuit, and when depressed, it closes the circuit to activate the brake lights. If the brake lights are not working, check the fuse and bulbs first. If those are fine, check for voltage at the switch; if there's none, search for an open circuit between the fuse block and the switch. If voltage is present, depress the brake pedal and check for voltage on the other side of the switch. If none, replace the switch. If there's voltage but the lights still don't work, look for an open circuit between the switch and the brake lights. For replacement, disconnect the electrical connector, rotate the switch counterclockwise 90 degrees to unlock it from the holder, then pull it out. To install, insert it into the holder, push it in until it contacts the rubber stop on the brake pedal bracket, and rotate it 90 degrees clockwise to lock it into place. Plug in the electrical connector, ensure brake lights function properly, and then resume normal vehicle use.
