1998 Lexus ES300 Crankshaft Seal Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and replace the front crankshaft seal on a four-cylinder engine on a 1998 Lexus ES300?
A: Remove the timing belt and crankshaft sprocket. Note how far the seal is recessed in the bore, then carefully pry it out of the oil pump housing with a screwdriver or seal removal tool. Wrap tape around the screwdriver lip and carefully work the crankshaft front oil seal out of the bore - DO NOT nick or scratch the crankshaft in the process! Avoid scratching the housing bore or damaging the crankshaft during this process. If the crankshaft is damaged, the new seal will end up leaking. The seal may be easier to remove if the old seal lip is cut with a sharp utility knife first. Clean the bore in the housing and coat the outer edge of the new seal with engine oil or multi-purpose grease. Apply multi-purpose grease to the seal lip. Using a socket with an outside diameter slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the seal, carefully drive the new seal into place with a hammer. Gently drive the new seal into place with the spring side installed into the engine. Ensure it is installed squarely and driven to the same depth as the original. If a socket is not available, a short section of large diameter pipe will also work. Check the seal after installation to ensure the spring did not pop out of place. Reinstall the crankshaft sprocket and timing belt. Run the engine and check for oil leaks at the front seal.
