The Lexus ES300 Wheel Cylinder is responsible for converting hydraulic fluid pressure into outward movement of the piston which presses brake shoes against the drum for confident stopping. Every Lexus ES300 drum brake has a cast aluminum or earlier cast iron Wheel Cylinder that mounts on the backing plate keeping twin pistons, cup seals, an expander spring, and dust boots. Brake fluid enters the bore, pushes against the pistons, brakes the car, then return springs and an internal expander spring pull everything back in. A top-mounted bleeder screw on the Wheel Cylinder allows trapped air to escape. On the later models of the Lexus ES300 cars, aluminum construction is applied to resist rust, but the basic twin-piston Wheel Cylinder design was the same in all years. - Q: How to replace a wheel cylinder on Lexus ES300?A:Never replace only one wheel cylinder - always replace both of them at the same time. To remove, raise the rear of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Block the front wheels to keep the vehicle from rolling. Remove the brake shoe assembly. Remove all dirt and foreign material from around the wheel cylinder. Disconnect the Brake Line with a flare-nut wrench, if available. To remove the wheel cylinder, unscrew the hydraulic line-to-wheel cylinder threaded fitting, then remove the mounting bolts. Don't pull the brake line away from the wheel cylinder. Remove the wheel cylinder mounting bolls. Detach the wheel cylinder from the brake backing plate and place it on a clean workbench. Immediately plug the brake line to prevent fluid loss and contamination. To install, place the wheel cylinder in position and install the bolts finger light. Connect the brake line to the cylinder, being careful not to crossthread the fitting. Tighten the wheel cylinder bolts to the torque. Tighten the brake line fitting and install the brake shoes and drum. Bleed the brakes. Install the wheel and lug nuts. Lower the vehicle to the ground and tighten the lug nuts to the torque. Check the operation of the brakes carefully before driving the vehicle.
