All models are fitted with an Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), often referred to as the airbag system that is intended to protect the driver and front seat passenger from severe or fatal head-on or frontal impacts. It has an impact sensor, a driver's airbag module which is made and installed in the steering wheel, a passenger's airbag module in the glove box area and a sensing /diagnostic module which is fixed on the floorpan. Other models also come equipped with side impact airbags, side curtain airbags as well as a driver's knee airbag. The steering wheel ensures an airbag inflator module which is a cushion and an inflator unit which inflates the bag almost simultaneously in receipt of an electrical signal. Another driver side airbag is usually put under the steering column to cushion the knees in case of an impact. The passenger airbag is in size larger than the driver's side and is installed inside the instrument panel while when it is inflated it is concealed with a textured trim cover. Side-impact curtain airbags sit in the outer contours of the seat backs and side-curtain airbags that descend from the headliner to cover the heads during a side impact. The sensing and diagnostic module provides power to the airbag system at the time of the accident and tests the airbag system every time the car is started, as shown by the 'AIR BAG' lamp. Again, to operate safely around the SRS components, the system has to be deactivated which involves turning the wheels straight, turning the key to the Lock position, removing the battery negative terminal and wait for two minutes. In cases of opening an airbag module the opening must be directed away from the body and the module placed away from the body with the opening facing upwards. Measurements of resistance of diodes of SRS components must not be taken and electrical welding must not be done without removing airbag connectors. Deployed or depleted modules encompass the material protection of live air bag systems and can only be processed by a dealer or a qualified repair center. The driver's airbag module and, therefore, the spiral cable must be installed and removed carefully The installation of other airbag modules has to be avoided Usually, the passenger airbag module can be disconnected in the event of an instrument panel removal.
