Lexus RX350 Coolant Reservoir

The Lexus RX350 Coolant Reservoir protects engine health by holding excess coolant, then releasing it back once the temperature drops and makes the coolant loop full and air-free. Mounted inside an RX350 engine bay, the tough plastic unit connects to the radiator via a hose, allowing heated coolant to expand into the tank instead of spilling onto the ground, in a simple act that also keeps dangerous antifreeze away from the environment. Across RX350 model years, two main styles can be found. Non-pressurized overflow versions put the pressure cap on the radiator, use a light plastic lid on the Coolant Reservoir, and depend on the difference in pressure to force liquid out and vacuum it back. Pressurized expansion designs boast the ability to move the rated metal cap to the tank itself, meaning the Coolant Reservoir is now in the sealed system, is higher than the radiator, and is molded from stronger reinforced plastic to withstand full system pressure while making a permanent air space for thermal growth. Many Lexus drivers like the obvious level marks that allow for cold engine checks to be carried out, and every RX350 Coolant Reservoir adds to the Lexus cooling system that prevents rust, leaks, and overheating. This Coolant Reservoir advantage extends the life of the Lexus powertrain.

Lexus RX350 Coolant Reservoir Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the radiator and coolant reservoir on Lexus RX350?
    A:
When working on RX 300/330/350, you start by undoing the negative battery cable and emptying out the cooling system. Take off the parts above the radiator (air intake ducts) and under (engine splash shields), plus any engine covers that are there. When doing repairs before 2003, take out the air conditioning condenser; after that year, remove the hood latch cover and hood latch. Also remove the radiator support cover, unhooking the horn wires and taking out the screws that hold the brackets and the cover. Take off the upper and lower radiator hoses, and the coolant reservoir hose from the top of the radiator. Take out the battery and front bumper for any car made after 2008. Open the radiator caps where the transaxle connects, and redirect the fluid with a pan underneath before blocking each connection with portable caps. If your car has a U880F transaxle, detach both transmission cooler tubes. Take off both sensors' Wave Radar and Smog Ventilation, then cut the wires that run to the engine cooling fans. Detach everything attached to the fan shroud and radiator. Start by removing the radiator's brackets. Pull out the radiator and fan shroud together, then remove the fans from the radiator. Check the radiator for any leaks, cracks, and blocked passages. Use air and a soft brush to clean it, being careful not to bend the fan blades while wearing eyewear. Taking the three pieces out goes the same way as putting them back - make sure all rubber mounts stay where they belong. Wash and check for coolant leaks before, during, and after engine operation. Ask the technician to mix antifreeze and water following instructions. Look at the cooler's fluid levels at medium and top heat as your engine heats up. To take out the coolant reservoir, you must pull it from the bracket on the fender well on most models. But on Lexus models made 2004 and later and Highlander models made 2007 and later, the reservoir sticks to the fan shroud and can't be removed. Drain the coolant into a container, look for damage in the reservoir, and throw it away if broken. Clean and reinstall the reservoir when all checked fine.
