Whenever one replaces brake shoes, it is important to replace the return and hold-down springs because they tend to lose tension over time which may make the shoes to drag on the drum and wear out prematurely. Firstly, loosen wheel lug nuts and raise rear of vehicle securing it with jackstands while blocking front wheels to prevent rolling. After that release the parking brake and remove the wheel. All four rear brake shoes should be replaced at once when working on one brake assembly avoiding part mix-up. Please follow this procedure of replacing a brake shoe, ensuring proper cleaning of the assembly without using compressed air and removing such parts as return spring, hold-down spring among others as directed in Figure 6-29. Then remember to ensure that parking brake is completely released when pulling off the brake drum; if you still cannot pull it off then retract the brake shoes with adjuster star wheel and screwdrivers. Once that is done, check for cracks, score marks, scratches or hard spots on the drum and where necessary resurface or replace if worn beyond resurfacing limits. Next install the brake drum, wheel, lug nuts again lower vehicle down to ground level and tighten lug nuts. Finally adjust brakes by making forward stop reverse stop operations with parking brake until good pedal action is achieved. Before taking your vehicle for a drive make sure you test thoroughly the operation of your brakes.

To replace the brake shoes, begin by removing the brake rotor and look at the shoe lining material thickness. If the thickness is worn down to 1/32-inch or less, then change the shoes. Remove the hub and bearing assembly and clean up the brake parts with a can of brake system cleaner. Use the illustrations provided for guidance in replacing your brake shoes; these will show you how to remove different springs, struts, pins, apply high temperature grease at contact surfaces as well as ensure that all components are properly engaged. Then install temporarily lug nuts securing it with lug nuts.Then, fix the hole plug on its place after backing off adjuster star wheel by eight notches. After that tighten bolts of torque plate and caliper to specified torque.Put back on wheel and tighten lug nuts to proper torque specifications.If there is a parking brake lever, check how many clicks it makes between 5-8 clicks and make adjustments as necessary.Finally, bed in shoes against drum by driving vehicle at approximately 30 mph while applying parking brakes allowing them to cool between applications perform procedure two or three times over.

Remove the brake disc. Inspect the shoe lining material's thickness; if worn down to 1/32-inch or less, replace the shoes. For shoe replacement, follow this order: remove both the front and rear parking brake shoe return springs from their respective anchor pins and unhook them, take off the rear shoe hold-down spring and its pin, remove the shoe strut between the shoes, take out the front shoe hold-down spring and its pin, remove the adjuster and the tension spring, pop off the C-washer from the pivot pin on the rear shoe's back and detach the parking brake lever, apply high-temperature grease to the backing plate's contact surfaces and the front shoe's backside, slide the parking brake lever onto the pivot pin with a new C-washer, flip the shoes, install the adjuster ensuring its ends engage with the shoes, attach the tension spring to the rear shoe's backside, place the shoes in position, install the strut and its spring ensuring the strut's ends engage with the shoes, and finally, install both the front and rear shoe return springs followed by their respective hold-down springs. With the assembly done, install the brake disc and use three wheel lug nuts to secure it. Remove the hole plug from the disc and adjust the parking brake shoe clearance using a tool or screwdriver until shoe-disc contact prevents disc turning. Back off the adjuster by eight notches, then replace the hole plug, ensuring the shoes don't drag on the disc. Install the caliper mounting bracket, followed by the brake caliper, ensuring the bolts are tightened. Install the wheel, tightening the lug nuts. If your vehicle has a parking brake lever, it should travel between five and eight clicks when pulled. To bed the shoes to the drum, drive at 30 mph on a dry, level road. Apply the parking brake slightly, driving 1/4-mile like this, and repeat two or three times, letting the brakes cool in between.

When you sense your car pulling to one side, when there is squealing or dragging noise from the brakes, excessive pedal travel, pedal pulsations or fluid leakages, ensure that the regular brake system inspections are carried out. The disc brake pads have built-in wear indicators which give out high-pitched noises like a squeal or scrape when they approach their replacement point and demand an immediate change of pads to avoid expensive damage to the discs. Start by loosening the wheel nuts, then lift up the vehicle and place it on jackstands. Remove the tires. For disc brakes, check pad thickness through inspection holes on each calliper while ensuring that lining material is above a specified thickness. If accurate measurement seems impossible or in case there are doubts about it, remove the caliper and pads for closer scrutiny. Wipe off pads with brake cleaner and remeasure using a steel pocket ruler or vernier caliper. Reveal disc thickness using micrometer; determine scoring, gouging, or burnt areas. In case of any problems with them think about disc resurfacing or doing away with them altogether by replacing with new ones. Before mounting your wheels inspect brake lines and hoses for cracks, worn out spots, rusting signs, leakage points as well as bends to make sure that they don't have any sharp edges on them; as well they should not interfere with moving parts in addition to exhaust components. Switch off for 30 seconds and re-start the engine to confirm reduced pedal travel with each subsequent application. One more thing left-check whether your parking brake is effective or not by counting clicks up of handle or down of pedal while pressing it until fully engaged. The number of clicks should match the specified count thus one needs to adjust parking brake accordingly. Alternatively, verify parking brake effectiveness by parking on a steep hill in Neutral; if the vehicle rolls, perform parking brake adjustments.
