Opening your fuel filler cap lets the fuel tank pressure escape, making maintenance easier. Take the terminal cable off from the end where the car's battery connects. Take out the fuel pump and fuel sensor. To keep fuel safe, drain it into a legal container with a siphon set, which most auto part stores sell. Put the vehicle on jack stands, but raised enough to keep it off the ground. To service models built before 2008, you must disconnect the exhaust system from just behind the catalytic converter to the muffler's tailpipe. On 4WD models, remove the driveshaft. Take off both the fuel tank protectors and the fuel tank heat shield. Loosen a screw-clamped clamp to detach the fuel filler neck hose from the fuel tank, and afterward work on two smaller clamps using springs to disconnect the EVAP hoses. Validate the fuel tank before you loosen the bolts to pull it out from its position on the car. After making the tank lower by about six inches, check that all electric wires, the fuel lines, and EVAP hoses have been completely disconnected. When done, first install the fuel straps with tightened bolts, then reposition the tank back on its position before reconnecting all the systems progressively.

Any repairs to the fuel tank or filler neck should be done by a professional with experience in this critical and potentially dangerous work. Even after cleaning and flushing the fuel system, explosive fumes can remain and ignite during the repair of the tank. If you are removing the fuel tank from the vehicle, do not place it where there are sources of heat or sparks. Be especially careful inside garages where a gas-type appliance is located, because it could cause an explosion.

Release pressure from your fuel system by lifting the fuel cap from its place to let fuel tank pressure escape. Separate the cable from the electrical connection at the car's battery negative side. Pull out the fuel pump and fuel level sensor unit from the system. Use a siphoning kit from a store to remove gas from a full or almost full tank into an approved gas can. Pull the entire rear subframe with its built-in differential out of your vehicle and lower it down. First disconnect the fuel tank from the car by taking out the retaining straps' bolts. Begin disposing your gasoline tank by first setting it 6 inches lower. Check each electrical hose, fuel line, and EVAP hose connection before lowering all the way to the ground.
