If you have a Toyota Highlander, Lexus RX (300 or 330) between 2007 and 2009 and 2012, after removing the fuel pump and Fuel Level Sensor from the fuel tank you can either replace the entire assembly or break it down to replace the strainer on the fuel inlet, fuel pressure regulator, fuel return jet tube, fuel pump, fuel filter, and level fuel sending unit. Remove unit assembly from fuel tank and drain residual gasoline, then mount sending unit assembly on clean, well ventillated workbench. First, disengage the locking tabs of the end cap at the bottom of the assembly using screwdrivers and carefully pry it off. Look at the fuel pump lower end and remove the rubber insulator, inspecting it for damages. Remove the fuel pump inlet strainer secured by an E clip, the fuel pressure regulator from the fuel return jet tube hose and fuel filter, and pull out the fuel return jet tube assembly which is retained in its clip. Locate the electrical connector, press the locking tab and remove the connector, then the fuel pump will come off the filter housing. Remove the four locking tabs and separate fuel filter housing from the upper part of the pump housing, noting that the fuel filter must be replaced with the fuel filter housing. Remove the Fuel Level Sensor from the upper part of the fuel pump assembly by disconnecting the locking tangs and lowering it. The reverse order of removal follows with reinstallation of the fuel pump and Fuel Level Sensor into the fuel tank.
