When servicing oxygen sensors, exercise caution with the following guidelines: oxygen sensors possess a permanently attached pigtail and electrical connector that cannot be detached from the sensor, so any damage or removal of these components will render the sensor useless; keep contaminants away from the electrical connector and sensor; abstain from using cleaning solvents on oxygen sensors; handle them gently to prevent damage. For replacements, note that 2008 and later models refer to the upstream sensor as the air-fuel ratio sensor and the downstream sensor as the oxygen sensor. On four-cylinder models, for upstream oxygen sensors, disconnect the negative battery cable, locate the sensor in the exhaust manifold heat shield, trace its electrical lead to the connector, disconnect it, then cautiously unscrew the sensor from the exhaust manifold using an oxygen sensor socket; for downstream oxygen sensors, raise the vehicle on jackstands, locate the sensor in the front exhaust pipe, trace the electrical lead to the connector, disconnect it, then unscrew the sensor. For V6 models, for upstream oxygen sensors, disconnect the battery cable, disconnect the upstream oxygen sensor electrical connector, and if replacing the rear exhaust manifold sensor, raise the vehicle and support it on jackstands, then unscrew the sensor; for downstream oxygen sensors, disconnect the battery cable, raise the vehicle on jackstands, locate the sensor, trace its electrical harness, and unscrew the sensor. In all cases, coat the oxygen sensor threads with anti-seize compound during installation and tighten to the specified torque.
