  To replace the shift cable, first disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, then remove the center console trim panel, the floor carpet, and the instrument panel center lower trim panel. Next, take out the battery and the battery tray, followed by the air filter housing and the air intake ducts. Disconnect the shift cable from the manual lever on the transaxle, noting that the manual shift lever is located on the side for 4- and 5-speed models and on the top for 6 and 8-speed models. Remove the large C-clip cable retainer from the bracket on the side of the transaxle and take the shift cable from the wire hanger on the top of the transaxle. For Lexus models, remove the air conditioning unit, then disconnect the shift cable from the shift lever assembly on the center console using a trim panel tool. For Highlander models, remove the two mounting bolts on the side of the center console. A stopper cap on 6- and 8-speed models must be rotated counterclockwise to release the cable from the shift lever bracket. Remove the bolts from the shift cable bracket at the firewall and pull the cable through the floor. Installation is the reverse of removal, and after completing the installation, adjust the cable. To adjust, ensure the shift lever inside the vehicle moves smoothly from the NEUTRAL position to other positions, with the shift indicator correctly aligned.
